4.5/5
I think Darynda Jones' books get better and better with each new one. They definitely get darker and much more gripping even if Charley Davidson started as light urban fantasy series.
Sure, there is still lots of laughter, but the stakes are higher and a lot of people close to Charley get hurt.
This time Charley tries to find a woman who disappeared from the household of an abusive husband while at the same time chasing the traces of Reyes' stepfather.
She is having a hard time concentrating from a lack of sleep. Since she bound Reyes to her, he torments her dreams and she can't rest, so our girl prefers to stay awake with copius amount of coffee which would burn through an average human's stomach lining easily. It's good that Charley is not an average human, right?
Reyes continues telling her that she is much more than she thinks and it's time she learned to use her powers, but Charley doesn't know how. As a result she is pushed to her limits physically and psychologically when everything she believed was true collapses under pressure.
My heart always goes to Charley, but the ending of book #3 is especially heartbreaking and I can not wait to find out what twisted, gut wrenching story Darynda Jones prepared for us in the next installment of this series. Very much recommended to all fans of urban fantasy. Fabulous series!
