I'm really on the fence with this book.
On one side the writing is brilliant. It's compelling, gripping, hard to tear your eyes away, terrifying. The day to day descriptions of what's happening and what the main characters feel about it are top notch.
On the other hand, anything that is not relevant to HERE and NOW is not there. No background, no conclusions, no answers. There are passages narrated by the darkness itself, but all they do is confuse you even more, especially the first and the last ones. This is exactly what I dislike in the books I read. Where the darkness came from, why all the survivals are young, what's happening in the rest of the world, what is the great evil plan?
So far all I got from the book is "wow! what? this is it?! I can't believe it! What was the point?.."
However, if you are a fan of apocalyptic stories and dystopias, you still wouldn't want to pass this book. I personally loved Ashfall by Mike Mullin much more.
